George Weiss Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,066.50

Official National League (Giles) ball signed by Hall of Fame executive George Weiss. Weiss has signed the ball in blue ink on a side panel, with the signature grading "9/10." James Spence Authentication examined this ball with a video spectral comparator (VSC), which allows for the observation of latent writing and/or markings. That examination revealed that a second signature (very possibly that of Early Wynn) was removed from the ball in the area directly below Weiss' signature. Analysis under the VSC also allowed for the identification of the ball as an Official National League (Giles) ball (only tiny traces of the manufacturer's stampings remain visible to the naked eye). Weiss is credited with developing the New York Yankees farm system in the early 1930s and he later rose to the position of general manager in 1948. Under Weiss' twelve-year tenure as general manager the Yankees won ten pennants and seven World Championships, thereby solidifying his reputation as one of the game's greatest executives. Weiss was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1971 and he passed away one year later at the age of seventy-seven. Because Weiss was an executive, and not a player, his autograph was rarely sought by collectors, especially on a ball. That, plus the fact that he died shortly after his Hall of Fame induction, has resulted in the extreme rarity of George Weiss single-signed balls today (we have never offered a George Weiss single). Examples such as this, while not "single signed" in the literal sense, offer the same aesthetic appeal and serve to fill a real need for many collectors. It must be emphasized that the former second signature is not visible to the naked eye and this example displays as a single-signed Weiss ball. The ball displays moderate soiling and has been coated with a layer of protective shellac. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,066.50
