1950s New York Yankees Team-Signed Ball Collection (6) - Mel Allen Collection

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,896.00

This collection of six different 1950s New York Yankees team-signed balls has one very important common denominator: each originates directly from the personal collection of Mel Allen, the legendary "voice of the Yankees." In 1997 Robert Edward Auctions had the privilege of offering all of the baseball memorabilia from Mel Allen's estate, with these balls representing just a few of the many keepsakes saved by Mel Allen that were featured in that auction. They have not seen the light of day since and have been consigned to this auction directly from the original purchaser at the 1997 Mel Allen estate auction. As is common for team-signed balls from this era, four feature one or more clubhouse signatures, all of which are duly noted in the listing. 1) 1950 New York Yankees World Champions team-signed ball. Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in black or blue fountain pen (averaging "8") by the following twenty-two team members: DiMaggio (sweet spot, clubhouse signature), Mize, Ford, Berra, B. Johnson, Lopat, Martin, Brown, Raschi (twice, one is a clubhouse signature), Henrich (clubhouse signature), Page (clubhouse signature), Houk, Reynolds, Ostrowski, Collins, Woodling, Coleman, Bauer, Silvera, Mapes (twice), Ferrick, and Sanford. The ball remains in extraordinary Near Mint to Mint condition. 2) 1953 New York Yankees World Champions team-signed ball. Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in blue ink (averaging "8") by the following twenty-eight team members: Mantle (clubhouse), Berra (sweet spot), Rizzuto, Mize, Ford, Coleman, Sain, Miranda, Schallock, Bauer, Kraly, Carey, Lopat, Kuzava (sweet spot), Renna, Bollweg, Gorman, Houk, Silvera, Martin, Reynolds, Raschi, McDonald, Miller, Woodling, McDougald, Triandos, and Noren. The manufacturer's stampings are light, but clearly legible; otherwise the ball is in Near Mint condition. 3) 1954 New York Yankees team-signed ball. Spalding "Official League" ball signed in blue ink (averaging "7") by the following twenty-two team members: Mantle, Berra (sweet spot), Slaughter, Reynolds (sweet spot), Woodling, Bauer (twice), Silvera, Lopat, Byrd, Cerv (twice), Leja, Morgan (twice), Sain, Miranda, Skowron, Coleman, Branca, Collins, Stuart, Carey, McDougald, and Houk. With some moderate, scattered age toning. Ex. 4) 1955 New York Yankees American League Champions team-signed ball. Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in blue or black ink (averaging "7/8") by the following twenty-eight team members: Mantle, Berra (sweet spot), Rizzuto (sweet spot), Ford, Coleman, Richardson, Robinson, Noren, Larsen, R. Coleman, Sturdivant, Turley, Carey, Bauer, Morgan, Grim, Kucks, Howard, Byrne, Martin, Cerv, Wiesler, Silvera, Staley, Collins, McDougald, Skowron, and Konstanty. The name "Mel" (indicating that this ball was being signed for Mel Allen) is printed in blue ink on a side panel. With very light age toning and a tiny area of discoloration on a side panel (not affecting any of the signatures). Ex. 5) 1958 New York Yankees World Champions team-signed ball.
