1954 Signed Old Timers' Day Photo with Cy Young, Ed Walsh, and Dazzy Vance
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,540.50
Original news photo picturing Dazzy Vance, George "Hooks" Wiltse, Carl Hubbell, Ed Walsh, and Cy Young posing together at a 1954 New York Yankees Old Timers' Day game held at Yankee Stadium. The players are all in uniform and are pictured standing on the top step of the dugout. Each player has signed the photo atop his respective image: Vance (black fountain pen, grading "6"), Wiltse (black fountain pen, "8"), Hubbell (blue fountain pen, "7"), Walsh (black fountain pen, "6"), and Young (black fountain pen, "6"). The original Associated Press paper news caption, dated 8/14/54, remains affixed to the reverse and reads in part: "Baseball greats of yesteryear took over at Yankee Stadium in New York City Aug. 14. in a three-inning exhibition game before regular Yankee-Boston Contest." Cy Young was eighty-seven years old at the time of this photo and it probably marked his final Old Timers' Day appearance, as he passed away a little more than a year later, on November 4, 1955. This is certainly a unique combination of signatures on a photo, as it features four of the greatest pitchers of all time, two of whom plied their trade during baseball's dead-ball era. The photo (9 x 7 inches) displays a number of light surface wrinkles throughout (nearly all of which can only be seen when viewed at certain angles) and is in Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,540.50
