1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug Hugh Duffy

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,370

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. One of only three examples graded at this level by SGC, with only one example graded higher (EX/NM 80). Extremely impressive example of one of key nineteenth-century Hall of Famer Hugh Duffy’s most striking and important cards. This is a very sharp-looking and conservatively graded N300 Mayo's Cut Plug of Hugh Duffy with an outstanding, crisp image. Just a little corner wear, very little border wear (primarily along the left), and no major creases (a tiny surface wrinkle in from the middle of the left edge, of no consequence). Centered slightly to the left. Submitted for grading by REA, this card has been consigned (along with a near-complete set of Mayos, all of which appear in this auction) by the family of one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors who assembled the set decades ago in the early days of organized collecting. This card was issued right around the time of Duffy's legendary .438 season in 1894, representing the highest single-season batting average by any player ever. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grade is $2,250. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
