1887 Sketches of the New York Base Ball Club (National League New York Giants)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,015

Exceedingly rare example of what is essentially one of the earliest baseball team yearbooks ever produced: 1887 Sketches of the New York Base Ball Club. The fifty-two page soft-cover book, authored by June Rankin and published by Richard K. Fox (also publisher of The Police Gazette), displays a large woodcut portrait illustration of New York Giants manager James Mutrie on the cover. Inside are full-page woodcut portrait illustrations and biographies for twenty team members, including Roger Connor, James O’Rourke, Buck Ewing, Mickey Welch, Tim Keefe, John Ward, Mike Tiernan, Danny Richardson, George Gore, and Mike Dorgan. Also featured within its pages are a brief history of professional baseball, a history of the New York Giants, a biography of manager James Mutrie, the full 1887 National League schedule, the 1887 Giants home schedule, and various advertisements. Interestingly, the home schedules for both the New York and Brooklyn entries in the rival American Association are also included. This is the first example we have ever offered of this nineteenth-century rarity, which remains in extraordinary condition given its extremely fragile nature. The front and back covers have completely detached from the spine and have been repaired with clear tape on the interior. The interior pages all remain firmly bound together. Each cover displays a few minor edge tears and the pages are clean and bright. In Very Good condition overall, but displaying a much more attractive Excellent overall appearance. This is a remarkable example of this seldom-seen piece and one that would be a welcome and very substantial addition to any advanced nineteenth-century baseball collection. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,015
