1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug Buck Ewing - Cincinnati
Starting Bid - $800, Sold For - $2,963
Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Magnificent high-grade N300 Mayo's Cut Plug of Hall of Famer Buck Ewing with Cincinnati. Ewing was first issued with "Cleveland" on his shirt, which was changed to "Cincinnati" when he joined the Reds for the 1895 season. This is a very bright and crisp card, with virtually no wear to the condition-sensitive edges and corners, and perfect centering. A few light surface wrinkles on the reverse are responsible for this card being downgraded from Excellent by SGC. Submitted for grading by REA, this card has been consigned (along with a near-complete set of Mayos, all of which appear in this auction) by the family of one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors who assembled the set decades ago in the early days of organized collecting. This is an outstanding high-grade example of one of the most important cards in the Mayo set of key Hall of Famer Buck Ewing. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500+.
