1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug Amos Rusie
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,851
Graded EX 60 by SGC. One of only two examples graded at this level by SGC, with only one example graded higher (EX/NM 80). The N300 Mayo's Cut Plug of Hall of Fame pitcher Amos Rusie from the New York Giants of the National League was issued in two variations in the Mayo set, with his name spelled correctly, and with his name misspelled "Russie," with an extra "s." This is the variation with the correct spelling. Bright and crisp, with very light wear to the condition-sensitive edges and corners (predominately the left edge), perfect contrast, and with centering toward the right. The back is flawless. Submitted for grading by REA, this card has been consigned (along with a near-complete set of Mayos, all of which appear in this auction) by the family of one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors who assembled the set decades ago in the early days of organized collecting. This is a very impressive high-grade example of one of the most important Hall of Famers in the Mayo set, and one of Amos Rusie’s most classic cards, dating from the height of his career. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grade is $4,500. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $3,851
