Circa 1978 Roger Maris Single-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $6,518
Official American League (MacPhail) ball signed in blue ink (grading "9") on the sweet spot by Roger Maris. Based upon the manufacturing stampings, this ball was most likely produced between the years 1977 and 1980, just a short time prior to Maris' death in 1985. Roger Maris is one of the most desirable of all non-Hall of Fame signatures, especially alone on a baseball. Unfortunately for collectors, Maris passed just prior to the "signing-show boom," thus resulting in the rarity of Maris singles in the hobby today. With a limited supply and high demand, it’s no wonder that Maris’ signature is one of the most commonly forged of all modern-era stars. Given the large number of problem "Maris" balls circulating in the marketplace today, an authentic Maris ball such as this is especially prized. The ball displays light, scattered age toning, particularly on the panel below Maris' signature, otherwise in Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
