Harry Heilmann Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $711

Store-model "Energized League Ball" signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Harry Heilmann in black fountain pen. Heilmann's signature (grading "7") has been scripted on a side panel and extends slightly into the sweet spot. This ball once bore the signatures of a few other players which have since been professionally removed (a fact that will always be apparent upon examination under special black light but is impossible to discern with the naked eye). While some purists may deride that practice, sometimes, as in this case, the end more than justifies the means. Harry Heilmann single-signed balls are exceedingly rare, so much so that we cannot even recall the last time we saw an example at public auction. Collectors, like nature, abhor a vacuum, and we are sure that many Hall of Fame single-signed ball collectors would appreciate this ball for exactly what it is: an outstanding "placeholder" until the day a true single-singed Heilmann ball surfaces. The fact that it offers the same exact aesthetic appeal as a true single, but will sell for a significant discount to a true single-signed ball, naturally has great appeal to collectors as well. The ball, which was manufactured for sale at Bechtel's Sport Shop in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, is lightly toned and remains in Excellent condition. While we do not know the exact year of manufacture of this ball, we did find that Bechtel's Sport Shop (which is no longer in business but was a Pottstown institution for decades) was founded in 1917. This is an outstanding Harry Heilmann signed ball and one that would make a fine representative single-signed example for any advanced collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $711
