1954 Honus Wagner Signed Contract

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,541

One-page contract, dated December 16, 1954, between Honus Wagner and the Robert Gould Company, signed in blue ink by Honus Wagner (grading "9/10") and Robert Gould ("9"). This contract grants the Robert Gould Company and its successors the exclusive and irrevocable right to reproduce Wagner's likeness in any form of statue or bas-relief and to use his name in connection with said statue or bas-relief. In exchange, Wagner is to receive an advance of $100, in cash or merchandise, as an advance against royalties of 5% of the gross income received by the Robert Gould Company from the sale of his likeness. Furthermore, the agreement shall remain in full force and effect for a period of one year and shall be automatically renewed from year to year thereafter, at the company's option, provided that Wagner receives at least a total payment in the sum of $250 for the contract year. Wagner passed away less than one year later, making this contract one of the last official documents ever signed by the legendary "Flying Dutchman." Interestingly, the Robert Gould Company did produce a set of twenty-eight plastic statues of various baseball players in 1955; however, Wagner was not included. (The set is officially known as the "1955 Robert Gould All-Stars Statues.") All of the issued statues were of then-current ballplayers. Apparently a second series was planned featuring old timers that never came to fruition. The contract (7.5 x 9.5 inches) displays two notebook holes along the top border and is otherwise in apparent Near Mint condition. Matted and framed together with a recent print of Wagner to total dimensions of 23 x 16.5 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,541
