Walter O'Malley Signed Legal-Document Collection (6 Signatures Total)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $830
Collection of three legal documents, each dating from 1948 and signed twice by Walter O'Malley in his capacity as attorney for the Ebbets McKeever Exhibition Company. All of the legal documents pertain to a case filed in the Supreme Court of the State of New York (County of New York) between Brooklyn Fights, Inc. (plaintiff) and the Ebbets McKeever Exhibition Company (defendant). At the time these documents were signed O'Malley was part owner, vice president, and General Counsel of the Brooklyn Dodgers. He did not acquire majority ownership of the club until October 1950, when he purchased additional shares of stock from Branch Rickey. The Ebbets McKeever Exhibition Company, which owned Ebbets Field, and the Brooklyn National Baseball Club, which owned the Dodgers, were separate corporate entities, both established in 1912. O'Malley passed away in 1979, but was only recently inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame (2008), resulting in the scarcity of his signature today. The offered documents are comprised of three identical copies of a corporate general release form, dated January 23, 1948, in which the Ebbets McKeever Exhibition Company, for the sum of one dollar, releases Brooklyn Fights, Inc., from all damages, judgments, extents, claims, etc., "from the beginning of the world to the day of the date of these presents." Each document, one of which has been notarized, has been signed twice in blue fountain pen by Walter O'Malley (two grade "10"; the other four display some extremely minor brushing and grade "8/9"). The two documents that are not notarized each display two notebook holes along the top border. All of the documents display light toning and are in overall Very Good to Excellent condition. Total: 3 documents featuring 6 O'Malley signatures. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $830
