1938 New York Yankees World Champions Team-Signed Ball with Gehrig and DiMaggio

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,252

Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in blue fountain pen by the following twenty-one members of the 1938 World Champion New York Yankees: Gehrig (sweet spot, grading "7"), DiMaggio, Combs (coach), Gomez, Dickey, Ruffing, Gordon, Beggs, Hadley, Sundra, Pearson, Chandler, Andrews, Knickerbocker, Powell, Crosetti, Henrich, Dahlgren, Murphy, Rolfe, and McCarthy (sweet spot, clubhouse signature as is almost the case for McCarthy on Yankees team balls). Signatures range in grade from "4" to "7," averaging "5/6." This is an outstanding and historic Yankees World Championship signed ball. 1938 marked the third of New York's four consecutive World Championships during the decade and also the last full season for Hall of Fame first baseman Lou Gehrig, who would be stricken with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) the following year. It is always amazing to us that an outstanding team ball such as this that can be dated with certainty and authenticated with greater ease, and that represents the entire team including Lou Gehrig, is valued far more modestly than a Lou Gehrig single-signed ball. We understand that how collectors value items is subjective, but we can't help but think an outstanding Yankees team ball such as this example represents an extraordinary value in comparison. The ball has some light soiling with a just a few small, minor surface blemishes. All of the manufacturer's stampings remain bold and legible. In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,252
