1938 Lou Gehrig Signed Rawhide Publicity Photograph

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,740

Extraordinary Lou Gehrig signed photo relating to his brief cinematic career. The Hollywood publicity photo, which offers remarkable clarity, pictures Gehrig in full Western attire as he poses on the set of the 1938 film Rawhide. Gehrig has flawlessly inscribed the photo in black fountain pen "To Babe + Joe - May I always prove myself worthy of your friendship - Sincerely - Lou Gehrig." Both the inscription and signature are perfect in their execution and grade "10." In January 1938, Gehrig traded his glove and bat for a saddle and holster when he agreed to star in the Western adventure Rawhide. Gehrig actually played himself in the film, which saw him retire from baseball to run a cattle ranch in Montana. Production on the Western was quick, approximately a month, so that Gehrig would be able to attend spring training. The film's premier took place that March, in St. Petersburg, Florida, where the Yankees were training, and its general release occurred on April 8th. The critics were actually kind to Gehrig in their reviews, but he later confided to friends that the film marked the first time in his life that he had ever been on a horse. The photo (7 x 9 inches) is in apparent Near Mint condition and has been matted and framed to total dimensions of 10.5 x 11.5 inches. This is the first Rawhide publicity still signed by Gehrig that we have ever offered and we cannot imagine a finer example. Given its immaculate condition and remarkably bold signature, this is certainly one of the finest Gehrig signed photos in existence. Perfect in all respects, this signed Gehrig photo is of such an extraordinary high quality that it would be a highlight in even the most advanced signed Hall of Fame photograph or Lou Gehrig collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $4,740
