Circa 1933 Jimme Foxx and Connie Mack Signed Photos

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,185

One young boy's unforgettable day at the ballpark is wonderfully saved for all posterity in this charming collection of black-and-white photos dating from circa 1933. Nearly all of the photos picture the boy (our consignor's father) on the field posing either with various members of the Philadelphia Athletics or his father, while one other captures members of the A's during pre-game warmups. The highlights of the group are two 8 x 10-inch photos of the boy posing, respectively, with Jimmie Foxx and Connie Mack, each of which has been signed by the Hall of Famer in black fountain pen. Foxx has signed the photo vertically atop his image, with the signature grading "9" (tiniest evidence of brushing). Mack has scripted his name at the base of the photo and while it is boldly penned (grading "9/10"), the contrast between the signature and the backdrop of the grass is less than ideal. Both photos display moderate handling wear, mostly in the form of creases along the corners and border areas (easily matted out), but the central image areas are free of any significant flaws and present as Excellent to Mint. Each of the remaining ten photos measures 3.25 x 4.25 inches, and the group is comprised of the following: the boy and Foxx (2; both identical to the larger photo); the boy and Mack (identical to the larger photo); the boy and Mickey Cochrane (3 identical photos); the boy and his father (2; Mack, Foxx, Cochrane can be clearly seen in the background conversing on the field); the boy and his father; and various members of the A's during pre-game warmups (Mack can be seen walking behind the batting cage). Excellent condition overall. The collection is accompanied by a one-page signed letter from our consignor detailing the history of these photos. As she relates in her letter, her father was born in 1926. Since he appears to be seven or eight years old in these photos, plus the fact that Cochrane joined Detroit in 1934, they were most likely taken in 1933. It should be noted that the venue appears to be a spring-training facility and Cochrane, unlike Foxx, is in street clothes. This is an exceptional collection of vintage photos, featuring never-before-seen images that capture a moment in time and the spirit of the game, highlighted by the two signed examples. Total: 12 photos (2 signed). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,185
