Circa 1933 "All-Star" Signed Ball with Ruth, Gehrig, Johnson, Foxx, and Many Other Notables

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,925

Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in black fountain pen by the following eighteen former major league players: Babe Ruth ("8"), Lou Gehrig ("7"), Jimmie Foxx ("6"), Walter Johnson ("sweet spot, "4/5"), Mickey Cochrane, Goose Goslin, Joe Cronin, Al Simmons, Earl Averill, Nick Altrock, Lloyd Brown, Dick Porter, Lou Blue, General Crowder, Carl Reynolds (sweet spot), Eddie Ainsmith, Ben Chapman, and Jack Hayes. There appears to be a third signature on the sweet spot, but it has faded beyond legibility. Signatures range from "4" to "10," averaging "6." Balls such as this are always intriguing. It is obviously not a team ball, so was it signed at another event at which all of these players were present, or over a period of time? We do know that this ball was only produced during the three-year period 1931-1933, which makes sense given the signatures present. All of the players represented here were associated with an American League team during that time frame with the exception of Eddie Ainsmith, whose major league career ended in 1924. Nine of the eighteen players who have signed the ball (Ruth, Gehrig, Cochrane, Foxx, Chapman, Averill, Crowder, Cronin, and Simmons) were members of the inaugural 1933 American League All-Star team, so it's very possible that the ball originated at that contest, and other signatures were added shortly thereafter. Obviously, we will never know for sure, but one thing is certain: this is both a remarkable and unique multisigned ball, featuring nine Hall of Famers, dating from the early 1930s. The ball has been coated with a very light layer of protective shellac and all of the manufacturer's stampings remain bold and legible. In Excellent to Mint condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000.
