Circa 1931-1933 Jimmie Foxx Single-Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,659

Official American League (Harridge) ball signed by Jimmie Foxx across the sweet spot in black fountain pen. A few small areas of light discoloration affect the "F" in "Foxx"; otherwise the signature grades "4." Based upon the manufacturer's stampings, this ball dates to the narrow three-year period 1931-1933, making it one of the earliest Jimmie Foxx single-signed balls extant. Ideally, those three years mark the height of Foxx's illustrious career. Foxx won back-to-back MVP Awards in 1932 and 1933. The "Beast" batted .364 with league-leading totals in home runs (58) and RBI (169) in 1932. The next season he managed to top himself by winning the coveted Triple Crown, totaling league-high marks in batting average (.356), home runs (48), and RBI (163). Jimmie Foxx single-signed balls are, along with those of Mel Ott, the most elusive of all 500 Home Run Club members. Examples dating from his active playing career are rarer still. The fact that the period of this ball's manufacture corresponds to the most prolific three-year span of Foxx's career naturally adds to its appeal and significance. The ball is lightly soiled and displays a number of minor abrasions, as well as a few small areas of age toning and/or discoloration. All of the manufacturer's labels remain clearly legible. In Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,659
