1964 Nellie Fox Signed Houston Colt 45's Contract
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $2,370
Four-page fold-over contract, dated March 5, 1964, between Nellie Fox and Houston Sports Association, Inc., flawlessly signed in blue ink by "Jacob Nelson Fox" (grading "10"). It has not been signed by a club representative. A carbon-copy of Houston general manager Paul Richard's cover letter to Fox, dated April 15, 1964, is stapled to the front of the contract. The one-year contract, for the 1964 season, calls for Fox to receive a salary of $40,000. This is Fox's penultimate major league contract. After fourteen seasons as the main catalyst for the Chicago White Sox, Fox was traded to the Houston Colt 45's in December 1963. He appeared in 133 games with Houston in 1964, finishing the year with a .265 average, 0 home runs, and 28 RBI. A twelve-time All-Star and 1959 American League MVP, Fox was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997. 104 of Hall of Fame players are rare and the offered example is no exception. This is the first Fox player contract we have ever offered. Both the contract (8.5 x 11 inches) and attached cover letter (same size) display two notebook holes at the top; otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $2,370
