1961 Red Schoendienst Signed St. Louis Cardinals Contract

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $3,259

Four-page fold-over contract, dated March 15, 1961, between Red Schoendienst and the St. Louis National Baseball Club, Inc., signed in blue ink by "Albert Schoendienst" (grading "10") and "Vaughan P. Devine" as general manager. The signature of National League president Warren Giles is a stamped facsimile. The one-year contract, for the 1961 season, calls for Schoendienst to receive a salary of $30,000. 1961 marked the return of Schoendienst to St. Louis after a short stint with the Milwaukee Braves, where he helped lead the club to two pennants and one World Championship. Schoendienst played sparingly in 1961, finishing the year with a .300 average in just 120 plate appearances. He retired after the 1963 season with 84 home runs, 773 RBI, and a .289 lifetime average. Shoendienst was a true baseball lifer, appearing in 2,216 games as a player, 2,100 as a manager, and over 2,000 as a coach. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1989. 104 of Hall of Fame players are rare and the offered example is no exception. This is the first Schoendienst contract we have ever offered. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays two horizontal folds and is in Excellent to Mint condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $3,259
