1950 Bill Dickey Signed New York Yankees Contract
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $593
Four-page fold-over contract, dated March 21, 1950, between Bill Dickey and the New York Yankees, Inc., flawlessly signed in blue ink by "William Dickey" (grading "10") and in black ink by "George M. Weiss" ("8") as vice president. The front of the contract has also been signed in black ink ("8") by William Harridge in his capacity as American League President. The one-year agreement calls for Dickey to serve as a coach for the Yankees during the 1950 season at a salary of $12,500. 104 of Hall of Fame players are rare and the offered example is no exception. This is only the second Dickey contract we have ever offered and we cannot recall having seen any others at public auction. Dickey served as a Yankees coach from 1949 to 1957, and then once again in 1960. He was hired primarily to work with catcher Yogi Berra. Under Dickey's tutelage Berra became an outstanding defensive catcher and the two were both later elected to the Hall of Fame, Dickey in 1954 and Berra in 1972. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays two horizontal folds, a light paper-clip impression in the upper left corner, and a few light creases. In Excellent overall condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $593
