1931 Jessie Haines Signed St. Louis Cardinals Contract
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $11,258
Four-page fold-over contract, dated January 15, 1929, between Jesse Haines and the St. Louis National Baseball Club, signed in black fountain pen by "Jessie J. Haines" (grading "8/9") and in blue fountain pen by "Branch Rickey," as vice president. Also signed on the front in black ink by John Heydler ("9") as National League President. The one-year contract, for the 1931 season, calls for Haines to receive a salary of $12,500. This contract is especially interesting because it was signed by Haines in 1929, but it is for the 1931 season. Haines was coming off back-to-back twenty-win seasons at the time this agreement was signed, and Rickey obviously sought to lock up his mound ace for a number of years. Haines only appeared in nineteen games in 1931, but he made the best of it, fashioning a record of 12-3 with a 3.02 ERA, helping to lead the club to its third pennant in six years. He retired in 1937 with a lifetime record of 210-158 and a 3.64 ERA. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1970. 104 of Hall of Fame players are rare and the offered example is no exception. This is the first Haines contract we have ever offered. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays two horizontal folds, along the edges of which are two small tears, and few minor surface wrinkles. In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $11,258
