1962 Salada-Junket Coins Complete Set of 221 Plus 16 Variations (237)
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,185
Complete set of 1962 Salada-Junket Coins (221 players) plus sixteen variations for a total of 237 different coins. Magnificent high-grade set with 90% Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex-Mt), 10% slightly lesser (mostly due to natural manufacturing flaws). This extremely attractive full-color coin set was issued one plastic-with-paper-insert coin per package with Salada Tea and Junket Pudding mix. The set features all the major stars of the era including Mantle, Mays, Clemente, Aaron, Koufax, Banks, Maris, Snider, and many more. The variations of this near master set include Wynn (pitching pose), Carey (White Sox), Tuttle (white buttons), Lillis (Cardinals), Hodges (Dodgers and Mets), Banks (OF and SS), etc. The set is missing twenty-eight variations (four of the twenty-eight missing are the rare variations of Williams, Brandt, Bailey, and Broussard) for a totally complete master set of 265 coins. This is a very substantial, scarce, and attractive issue, loaded with rarities, stars, and Hall of Famers, which has been overlooked by collectors in recent years. Few collectors realize how difficult sets are to assemble, especially after acquiring the initial 180-coin production run. Salada coins are also one of the more interesting choices of premiums ever devised to help generate sales of a product. We understand the issuing of these coins with desserts, but when you get right down to it, it's just hard to imagine what Salada was thinking when they also issued these with tea. Even in the early 1960s, few youngsters were drinking tea, and even those that did have an occasional cup could not possibly be expected to drink enough to actually collect this set, issued one coin per box. But this is part of the charm of the set; and the unique designs, great players, and unmistakable early 1960s flavor of the set make this issue a classic of the era. Total 237 coins (complete set of 221 plus 16 variations). Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200+. SOLD FOR $1,185
