1955 Rodeo Meats Athletics Collection (28 cards)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,133
Collection of twenty-eight cards from the 1955 Rodeo Meats set, one of the scarcest and most distinctive of all 1950s regional food issues. This rare regional issue features exclusively Kansas City Athletics players, and was issued to capitalize on the excitement of the inaugural year of the Athletics in Kansas City. This group represents twenty-eight of the thirty-eight different players in the 1955 Rodeo Meats set, and in fact represent a complete set of the first series of Rodeo Meats in 1955 (the additional ten cards were issued later). The collection consists of the following: Astroth, Boudreau (HOF), Boyer (pink background), Ceccarelli, DeMaestri (light green background), Ditmar, Finigan, Gorman, Herbert, Kellner, Kraft, Littrell, Lopez, Melillo, Portocarrero (gray background), Power (yellow background), Raschi, Renna (light pink background), Sain, B. Shantz (correct spelling), W. Shantz (purple background), Simpson, Slaughter (HOF), Sleater, Susce, Valo (green background), Wilson (purple background), and Zernial. These are all attractive cards, in most cases far superior to what is normally found for Rodeos, many with a Near Mint appearance from the front, but technically these cards would grade lower due to light stains on their reverses (most easily seen at an angle in proper light), the result of at one time being glued in (as intended) and later carefully removed from the album issued by Rodeo Meats for this purpose. In fact, it is because these cards were carefully saved in an album as intended that they are so fresh and crisp! These cards do not have meat stains or creases, were very carefully cared for, and consequently look very much the same as they did in 1955. Five of the cards have light paper loss to the reverse. Since production quality was often imperfect on this issue, twelve of these cards have factory miscuts/centering issues (this comes with the territory with Rodeos). This collection represents a rare opportunity to acquire an ideal foundation for the assembly of a beautiful complete set of this classic 1950s regional food issue. Total: 28 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,133
