1954 Dan-Dee Potato Chips Complete Set (29)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,148

Presented is a gorgeous high-grade Dan Dee Potato Chips set! Complete high-grade set of these popular cards, which were issued one card per bag of Dan-Dee potato chips. Dan Dees are usually found with serious condition problems relating to this method of issue, including creases and potato-chip grease stains. The wax coating on the surface of these cards was intended to protect them from grease staining. This is a remarkably strong high-grade set, even better than the grades that follow suggest, as Dan-Dees naturally get downgraded due to extremely minor technical factors related to their method of production and packaging. Since these cards were issued primarily in the Pittsburgh and Cleveland areas, it is not surprising the players featured are mostly Pirates and Indians, although the three New York area teams are also represented. Twenty-six cards (out of the twenty-nine cards in the set) are graded and encapsulated by SGC: One NM/MT 88: Feller (HOF). Three NM 84: Lemon (HOF), Rizzuto (HOF), and Rosen. Nine EX/NM 80: Bauer, Easter, Garcia, Hegan, Irvin (HOF), LaPalm, Mitchell, Snider (HOF), and Wynn (HOF). One EX+ 70: Lopez (HOF). Four EX 60: Avila, Mantle (HOF; solid Ex-Mt card downgraded due to very light toning), Schoendienst (HOF), and Surkont. Three VG/EX 50: Cooper (short print), Doby (HOF), and Houtteman. Five VG 40: Gordon, Hodges, Strickland, Thomas, and Westlake. Three ungraded: Friend (Gd), Roberts (Vg), and Smith (short print, Fr-Gd). This is an exceptionally attractive (and for Dan-Dees very high grade) set of one of the classics of 1950s regional food issues. Also included are two duplicates: Bauer (SGC VG/EX 50) and Thomas (Gd). The equivalent SMR for just eighteen SGC-graded cards (not including the four VG/EX 50s, five VG 40s, and four ungraded cards) is $4,540. Total: 31 cards (complete set of 29 plus two duplicates). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+. SOLD FOR $4,148
