1888 N172 Old Judge Hugh Duffy - Rookie

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $948

Graded POOR 10 by SGC. 1887 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer Hugh Duffy in a fielding pose (#135-2). This is an exceptionally attractive rookie card, with an unusually pronounced photo border, and with advertising and player identification typesetting more striking and bolder than on most Old Judge cards. Bright, crisp, and perfectly clean, with excellent photo quality, no creases, and even corner wear (a little more in the upper right). The reverse has glue residue and paper loss in the center which is solely responsible for its harsh technical grade. It is otherwise in Excellent condition. Hugh Duffy is credited with one of the greatest single seasons in the history of baseball. Not only did he bat a record .440 in 1894 but he also captured the triple crown by hitting 18 home runs and knocking in 145 RBIs, both incredible numbers at the time. This is a very impressive, crisp, clean, high-grade N172 example of Hugh Duffy dating from his rookie season. This card is one of the highlights from a larger collection of N172 cards, which we have broken down into several smaller lots in the auction. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++.
