1889 N172 Old Judge Sam Thompson with Philadelphia
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $5,333
Graded EX 60 by SGC. Very striking 1889 N172 Old Judge example of Hall of Famer Sam Thompson (#456-4 pose) with the Philadelphia Nationals. This is an extremely attractive card with a perfectly clean front and back, no creases, outstanding picture quality, and light corner wear. The card is in outstanding Excellent condition, with a very strong image for this card (which is often seen with a poorer photo quality in pink tint) with an overall appearance stronger than its technically accurate grade. This is also a particularly fascinating card. Though the copyright date at the bottom of the card clearly reads "1887," this card was issued in 1889, after Thompson finished the 1888 season with Detroit, and signed with Philadelphia. There were not yet any photographs of Thompson in a Philadelphia uniform available, so Goodwin took a photo of Thompson from 1887 featuring him in his Detroit uniform and had the art department do its "magic" to substitute "Philadelphia" onto his uniform. This is a magnificent high-grade N172 Old Judge example of "Big Sam" Thompson, worthy of any world-class vintage card, Hall of Fame, or Old Judge collection. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
