1952 Berk Ross Near-Complete Set (68 of 72)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,259

Near-complete set of 1952 Berk Ross cards, consisting of 68 of the 72 cards in the set. The four cards missing for completion are Campanella, Kennedy, Kiner, and Newcombe. This set (minus 4) consists of the best examples in terms of condition that could be assembled from a larger collection of 150+ 1952 Berk Ross cards, which were recently discovered in an estate by our consignor. (The balance of the collection is being offered as a separate lot in the auction.) 75% range from Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex-Mt), 25% Vg to Vg-Ex (with a few slightly lesser). 1952 Berk Ross is a fascinating set, as it includes Joe DiMaggio's final traditional trading card as a player, and also Mickey Mantle in the same pose as his 1951 Bowman rookie card. The 1952 Berk Ross cards are similar in design to the 1951 Berk Ross card set, though slightly different in dimensions (they are larger and vertical in format) and the set was issued as individual cards instead of the perforated two-card panel design from the previous year. Four cards have been graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). Keys: Ashburn (Vg-Ex), Berra (Ex-Mt), Joe DiMaggio (SGC NM 84), Doby (Ex-Mt), Doerr (Ex/Ex-Mt), Feller (Nr/Mt), Hodges (Nr/Mt), Irvin (Ex-Mt), Kell (Ex-Mt), Lemon (Ex-Mt), Mantle (SGC EX 60), Martin (Ex), Mays (SGC EX/NM 80), Mize (Ex+), Musial (Nr/Mt), Reese (Vg-Ex), Rizzuto/bunting (Ex), Rizzuto/swinging (Gd-Vg), Roberts (Vg-Ex), Jackie Robinson (Gd-Vg), Schoendienst (Ex-Mt), Snider (Gd-Vg), and Ted Williams (SGC NM 84). This is a very attractive mid- to high-grade complete set (minus 4) of this substantial early 1950s issue. The 1952 Berk Ross set is among the most interesting and overlooked sets of the era. It is also far rarer than collectors realize. (There were never any 1952 sets available from Bruce Yeko's Wholesale Cards as is the case with the 1951 set.) The equivalent SMR value for just the four graded cards (not including the sixty-four ungraded cards) is $1,925. Total: 68 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
