1951 Topps Connie Mack's All-Stars PSA-Graded Complete Set Minus Two (9 of 11) Plus Extra Wagner
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,703
Outstanding high-grade complete set (minus two) of the legendary 1951 Topps Connie Mack's All-Stars. Missing only E. Collins and Johnson for completion. This landmark set issued by Topps in its first year in the baseball-card business features Connie Mack's all-time team of great players. Offered is an extremely attractive high-grade near-complete set of nine cards (plus one duplicate, for a total of ten cards), highlighted by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. All ten cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA (all personally submitted by our consignor who collected back in the 1970s). One thing about 1951 Topps Connie Mack All-Stars: because of their die-cut design, there are so many little things that can get these cards downgraded that they tend to look a lot better than their technical grades suggest. That is certainly the case here. This is a gorgeous near-set of this significant issue! All cards (except one) are complete with backgrounds intact and grade as follows: Grover Alexander (EX+ 5.5), Mickey Cochrane (VG+ 3.5), Jimmy Collins (VG-EX 4 mc), Lou Gehrig (EX 5), Connie Mack (VG-EX+ 4.5), Christy Mathewson (VG-EX+ 4.5), Babe Ruth (Authentic, small background piece missing, otherwise Ex), Tris Speaker (EX 5), and two Honus Wagner (EX 5 and VG-EX 4). Because these die-cut cards are designed to stand up by folding back the backgrounds, they are particularly prone to damage and are often found with the backgrounds damaged or completely removed. This is an extraordinarily attractive high-grade near-set of this milestone Topps issue: one of the rarest, most significant, and most condition-sensitive of all postwar-card issues. When comparing the prices of cards twenty or more years ago, 1951 Topps used to be far more expensive relative to many other rare cards. In our opinion, this issue has been overlooked by collectors in recent years in large part because they are graded so harshly by modern grading companies (which of course did not exist in the 1960s and 1970s). The SMR value for just four of the ten graded cards (not including the VG+ 3.5 Cochrane, VG/EX 4 mc J. Collins, VG-EX+ 4.5 Mack, VG-EX+ 4.5 Mathewson, Authentic Ruth, and VG-EX 4 Wagner) is $2,850. This is an extremely impressive looking near-complete set (plus one duplicate) of one of the most important sets of the postwar era. Total: 10 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+.
