1949 Bowman Near-Complete PSA Graded Set (213 of 240 cards)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,259

1949 Bowman near-complete set of 213 different (out of 240 cards in set) plus two variations for a total of 215 cards. This is an extremely attractive medium-grade near-complete set, and rarely offered this nice as a set. While the condition of cards from this near set spans several grades, even the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. Many rookie cards of Hall of Famers are featured in this classic postwar issue, highlighted by Richie Ashburn, Duke Snider, and Bob Lemon. All the cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA (all have been personally submitted to PSA over the past couple years by our consignor, now 87 years old, who collected back in the 1970s). Two cards are graded NM 7, five EX-MT 6s, ten EX+ 5.5s, sixty-six EX 5s, twelve VG-EX+ 4.5s, eighty VG-EX 4s, thirty-two VG 3s, five GOOD 2s, two FR 1.5s, and one PR 1. Missing the following twenty-seven cards for completion: #9, 10, 11 Boudreau, 23 Doerr, 36 Reese, 46 Roberts, 51, 65 Slaughter, 67, 84 Campanella, 88, 98 Rizzuto, 100 Hodges, 109, 110 Wynn, 111 Schoendienst, 114, 148, 150, 151, 153, 156, 168, 174, 223, 224 Paige, and 234. This is a beautiful near-set. The PSA grades are as follows: Two NM 7: #22 and 191. Five EX-MT 6: #25, 35, 117, 215, and 216. Ten EX+ 5.5: #41, 76, 133, 135, 184, 212, 214 Ashburn RC, 221, 222, and 236. Sixty-six EX 5: #13, 17, 18, 20, 27 Feller, 29 Kiner, 32, 34, 38, 42, 43, 47, 48, 56, 57, 63, 64, 68, 75, 77, 79, 80, 81, 89, 92, 93, 94, 101, 115, 123, 124, 125, 126, 131, 132, 134, 137, 138, 141, 142, 144, 145, 154, 155, 160, 165, 167, 172, 173, 179, 182, 190, 192, 197, 199, 205, 206, 207, 208, 210 Gordon, 213, 217, 230, 231, 235, and 239. Twelve VG-EX+ 4.5: #30, 31, 49, 112, 130, 136, 170, 195, 227, 229 Lopat RC, 237, and 238 Lemon RC. Eighty VG-EX 4: #4 (NOF), 5, 6, 8, 16, 19, 26 Kell, 28, 33 Spahn, 37, 40, 44, 50 Robinson, 54, 58, 59, 60 Berra, 61, 66, 70 Furillo RC, 71, 72, 74, 78 (NOF), 82, 83, 85 Mize NOF, 90, 91, 95, 96, 97, 103, 104, 106, 107, 113, 116, 118, 119, 120, 121, 127, 139, 140, 143, 149, 157, 158, 159, 162 Roe RC, 163, 166, 171, 175 Appling, 176, 178, 180, 181, 185, 186, 187, 188, 189, 193, 194 Branca RC, 198, 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 209, 211, 218, 219, 220, 225 Coleman RC, 232, and 233 Doby RC. Thirty-two VG 3: #1, 2, 4 (NNOF), 7, 14, 15, 21, 52, 53 (MK), 55, 62, 69, 78 (NNOF), 86, 87, 99, 102, 105, 122, 128, 129, 146, 147, 152, 161, 169, 177, 183, 196, 226 Snider RC, 228, and 240 (MK). Five GOOD 2: #3, 12, 39, 45, and 73. Two FR 1.5: #24 Musial and 164. One PR 1: #108. This near set is far superior to the average 1949 Bowman set. 1949 Bowman is the most underrated set in terms of rarity among Topps and Bowman sets issued between 1948 and 1955. This collection represents the foundation for a strong medium-grade complete set of this classic postwar gum card issue. Total: 215 cards (near-set of 213 plus two variations). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++.
