1948-1949 Caramelos El Indio (Cuban Issue) #13 Monte Irvin - Rookie!
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,444
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Highest-graded example! One of only three examples graded by SGC (the other two are both in Authentic holders). Offered is the only true rookie card of Hall of Famer Monte Irvin from the 1948-1949 Caramelos El Indio baseball-card set. (It would be a full two years before Irvin made his appearance in the 1951 Topps Red Back and 1951 Bowman issues!) One of the rarest of all Cuban card issues is the El Indio Caramel set issued in 1948-1949. Featuring players from the Cuban Winter League, this set is of great significance as it is one of the very few sets of the era to include Negro League stars. The photographs used in the El Indio set are unique to this issue. El Indio cards feature striking black-and-white portraits with player identification and advertising on reverse. Most cards are found with back damage due to having been mounted in an album that was issued to store and display the cards. This card is an extremely pleasing example, with a few creases, and slight evidence of album removal on reverse (as is typical for the issue but affecting the technical grade), and with a strong image. This is a very significant HOF rookie card extreme rarity. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $4,444
