1931 W517 Strip Card Collection Including Ruth and Gehrig (27)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,541
Outstanding collection of twenty-seven different 1931 W517 strip cards including sixteen Hall of Famers, highlighted by very sharp examples of #20 Babe Ruth and #35 Lou Gehrig. From an old-time Detroit area collection, these cards have not seen the light of day in decades. The popular W517 large-style strip card (3 x 4 inches) set consists of fifty-four different Major Leaguers. This issue was originally sold in vertical strips of three, which were intended to be hand-cut by youngsters. Cards from this set are often in somewhat rough condition (miscut, creases, back damage, etc.). This group is comprised of cards far nicer than usually found for this condition-sensitive issue. Most of these cards are fresh, clean, nicely cut, very impressive examples with an Excellent appearance but have been downgraded due to glue and paper remnants (mostly in the corners) on their reverses from scrapbook removal. Twenty-two of the cards (all but five) have this minor back damage to some degree (see images online; it's pretty minor!) and the listed grades are without reference to the backs (which of course would affect technical grades). The collection consists of the following: #2 Traynor (Vg-Ex), 3 Roush (Ex), 5, 7, 9 Harris (Vg, no back damage), 11 Kelly (Vg), 13, 19 Cuyler (Ex), 20 Ruth (Vg-Ex), 21 Foxx (Vg), 26 (no back damage), 27 Lazzeri (Ex), 28 Manush (Vg, no back damage), 30 Ott (Gd), 31, 32, 33, 34 P. Waner (Ex-Mt), 35 Gehrig (Vg-Ex/Ex), 38 Hornsby (Vg), 42 Wilson (Ex-Mt), 46 J. Sewell (Gd), 48, 49, 50 (no back damage), 52 Collins (Ex, no back damage), and 53. This is a very clean, impressive, great group of cards, which includes a particularly high concentration of Hall of Famers, and very strong examples of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Total: 27 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,541
