1921 W551 Complete PSA-Graded Set (5 panels)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,541
Complete 10-card set of 1921 W551 strip cards, highlighted by eight Hall of Famers including Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Walter Johnson, and presented on five two-card panels (when issued, these cards were sold in ten-card panels). Each two-card panel has been graded and encapsulated by PSA: Baker/Bancroft (EX 5), Barnes/Stengel (GOOD 2), Johnson/Sisler (VG-EX 4), Ruth/Cobb (Authentic; Cobb has an irregular cut along the right edge), and Pipp/Speaker (EX-MT 6). These colorful cards are referred to as "strip cards" because they were originally issued in uncut sheets or "strips" and were cut apart, as intended, with scissors. In the early days of the organized hobby, strip cards did not "get any respect." It is only in recent years that collectors have begun to appreciate the distinctive look and tremendous value these cards represent. Presented in two-card panels as seen here (as opposed to cut into individual cards as usually seen), this complete W551 set is particularly striking and unusual. Total: 10 cards on five two-card panels. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $1,541
