1916 M101-5 Sporting News #90 Walter Johnson (Famous & Barr Ad on Back)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,896
Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC. Highest-graded example by SGC! Hands-above-head pose of Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson M101-5 with rare Famous and Barr Company back. This card was saved by the father of our consignor. Her family originally lived in St. Louis, Missouri, and her father personally got this card in 1916 directly from the Famous and Barr Company! Perfectly clean, both front and back, with four sharp corners, bright and crisp image, and a boldly printed advertisement on the reverse. Though graded a very impressive EX/NM 80 by SGC, we think even this grade is conservative. We grade this card slightly higher at Near Mint. This is a gorgeous card, and one of just a few that we have separated from the balance of a crisp, uncirculated collection to be offered individually. This is an extraordinary high-grade card that would be a significant addition to any Walter Johnson or prewar Hall of Fame card collection. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
