1887 N172 Old Judge Buck Ewing

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,185

Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. 1888 N172 Old Judge card featuring New York Hall of Famer Buck Ewing (#149-6). Ewing is one of the most prominent of all nineteenth-century Hall of Famers. The offered example has a flawless surface, four square corners displaying just a hint of wear, and is very well centered. Particularly bright, crisp, and clean, front and back (light ink stamp on reverse). The photo is actually even stronger than it appears at a glance on this card, as Ewing's light uniform naturally does not contrast strongly against the light background. This is a very attractive high-grade example of one of the most highly prized Hall of Famers in the N172 Old Judge set. The ink stamp on the reverse is responsible for the extremely harsh technical SGC grade, but Old Judge collectors are well aware that ink stamps and other back damage "comes with the territory" with Old Judges. The ink stamp doesn't bother us at all. We grade this card considerably higher. This is a great card! This card is one of the highlights from a larger collection of N172 cards, which we have broken down into several smaller lots in the auction. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++.
