1911 E94 George Close Candy Ty Cobb "Home Run" Overprint
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,555
Offered is a "Home Run" E94 George Close Candy overprint featuring legendary Hall of Famer Ty Cobb. All E94 overprints are extremely rare, but one featuring Ty Cobb is all the more noteworthy. The overprint on this card is an extraordinarily bold, flawless, and vibrant blue, and is a perfect strike that really stands out, which of course is ideal for an E94 overprint example. "Overprinting" is a term commonly used to refer to the rare practice of a company taking cards already printed (in some cases even issued by another manufacturer) and adding advertising, in the form of printing or an ink stamp, to allow the cards to function as its own advertising vehicle at modest cost. E94s without advertising overprints, which is almost all of them, do not identify the George Close Candy Company as the issuer in the text on the reverse. Only the extremely rare advertising overprints, such as this example, provide the George Close Candy attribution. In this case, the overprint on this E94 Ty Cobb advertises "Home Run! For Close's Butter Balls - 4 For 1c. - Made by The George Close Co. - Cambridge, Mass." This card has a bold image set against a deep red background, evenly rounded corners, several creases (one slightly breaking the surface) mainly at the top (which do not affect Cobb's image), and minor surface wear (a hint of white shows in the red background in two places from wear). This is a very attractive low-grade Ty Cobb example of one of card collecting's most unusual and rare 1910-era sample cards. Encapsulated Authentic by SGC. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
