1914 T213 Coupon Cigarettes Ty Cobb (Type 2) - Portrait
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,259
Graded VG 40 by SGC. Incredibly stunning T213 (Type 2) of Ty Cobb in a portrait pose, one of the key cards to this elusive and extremely rare tobacco set. T213 (Type 2) Coupon Cigarettes is one of tobacco-card collecting's rarest and most overlooked sets. This is the finest T213 (Type 2) example of Cobb we have ever seen or offered. 1914 T213 (Type 2) Coupon Cigarettes is a particularly interesting issue. Similar in design and borrowing the same images as T206, the T213 (Type 2) Coupon set was issued exclusively in the Louisiana area, and is far rarer than its T206 counterparts. Because they were issued in 1914, they are not only one of the last of the traditional tobacco-card issues, but also one of the few tobacco-card sets to feature players identified with Federal League teams. Their connection and significance to the T206 set is especially fascinating due to cards where the players are identified with teams different than those indicated in the T206 set. In many ways, the T213 (Type 2) Coupon is truly an extension of the T206 set. The coupon cards are seldom seen, and because of this receive little attention, but upon reflection we think it would be impossible for any advanced tobacco collector to not appreciate the intrigue and unique connection of T213 (Type 2) Coupons (as well as their extreme relative rarity) to the T206 "White Borders" set. Do not be fooled by the modest technical grade assigned by SGC! This is an outrageous card! While we have not personally seen all examples of 1914 T213 Coupon Ty Cobbs in existence, this is the most impressive of the few we have seen, and we would put this card up against any other example and expect it would compare very favorably. We like this card! This is a gorgeous T213 (Type 2) Ty Cobb, which has an appearance far superior to Vg condition, but is kept from a higher grade due to a light vertical crease to the left of Cobb which is typical of T213 (Type 2) cards (and is actually related to how they were produced). It is flawlessly bright, clean, and almost perfectly centered, with a deep red background and perfect registration. The corners are strong and square with only the lightest hint of wear. The back is clean with very bold and crisp print. T213 (Type 2) Coupons are far rarer than their T206 counterparts. This is an extraordinary example of perhaps the single most desirable key card in the set, and one of Cobb's rarest and most interesting tobacco cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+.
