1913 WG5 "National Game" Cards Complete Set (54) Including Joe Jackson SGC MINT 96!

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $7,703

Presented is a newly discovered, incredibly high grade complete set of all fifty-two 1913 "National Game" cards including a MINT example of key card Joe Jackson! The Joe Jackson is the highest SGC example ever graded (and is one of only three examples ever graded at this level). This set has not seen the light of day since 1913! (And obviously did not see use back then either). The set is accompanied by its original rules card and score card, for a total of 54 cards. The 1913 WG5 "National Game" set is comprised of forty-three different individual players and nine action photos. "The National Game" cards are nearly identical in design to the "Tom Barker Baseball" card set except for the different back design, which is in red and features advertising for "The National Game." All the greatest stars of the era are represented, including Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Nap Lajoie, Tris Speaker, Cy Young, and many more. We have selected eight cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). The SGC grades are as follows: Two MINT 96: Jackson and Mathewson. One NM/MT 88: Young. Two NM 84: Alexander and Lajoie. Two EX/NM 80: Cobb and Speaker. One EX 60: Johnson. The balance of the cards are similar in grade to the eight SGC-graded cards submitted by REA. Additional Hall of Famers include: Baker, Bender, Bresnahan, Chance, Clarke, Crawford, Evers, Griffith, Huggins, Jennings, Mack, Marquard, McGraw, Tinker, Wagner, and Walsh. These sets usually come either in virtually perfect condition or with significant wear from use as intended. This is an unusual set in that most cards are very sharp, almost all ranging from Ex to Nr/Mt or better, but the set includes just a few cards here or there that appear Ex or better at a glance but technically grade lower (probably from just casual handling as the deck has obviously been virtually untouched and clearly has never seen use). This is a stunning ultra high-grade set. The "National Game" set in general represents an outstanding value, perhaps compared to all other 1910-era baseball sets. The equivalent SMR value for just the eight SGC-graded cards (not including the additional 46 cards) is $6,965. Total: 54 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $7,703
