1912 T207 Brown Background Complete PSA- and SGC-Graded Set (204)

Starting Bid - $10,000, Sold For - $41,475

Presented is a complete set of 200 1912 T207 Brown Background cards, including all of the many rarities of the set, among them particularly strong examples of legendary rarities Irving Lewis (PSA EX 5) and Lowdermilk (PSA VG 3), plus four variations, for a total 204 different cards. The entire set is graded and encapsulated by PSA (61), SGC (131), GAI (4), or SCD (8). This is a particularly strong set in terms of condition, especially for T207, which are so prone to surface cracking and creasing. The set was very carefully assembled over a period of many years one card at a time by a very patient and dedicated collector. The T207 set includes approximately fifty particularly rare cards and from the earliest days of collecting this fact has always made completion extremely challenging. The T207 set has always been fascinating to advanced collectors, and includes a high concentration of obscure players that appear in few other sets, as well as Hall of Famers such as Tris Speaker and Walter Johnson, and “Black Sox” members Weaver and Cicotte.

In the following condition composite, identifying card numbers are referenced from the numbers provided by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. As is well known, grading companies can be very harsh on T207s (especially due to light surface creasing which is characteristic of the set), and many cards have a far superior appearance than suggested by their overall very strong technical grades. PSA and SGC grading composite: One card is graded PSA NM 7: #35. Eight cards are graded PSA EX-MT 6: #58, 123, 136, 144 Peters, 166 Stack, 183, 190, and 191. Seven cards are graded EX+ 70: #19 Bresnahan (HOF), 40 Davis (brown "C" on cap, SCD EX+ 5.5), 62, 108 Marquard (HOF), 130 Moriarty (GAI EX+ 5.5), 140 (SCD EX+ 5.5), and 195. Forty-three cards are graded EX 60: #2, 4b Austin (no insignia), 8 Bauman, 12, 18, 22, 30, 31 (PSA EX 5), 33 (PSA EX 5), 38 (PSA EX 5), 44, 46 Donnelly (GAI EX 5), 54 Erwin, 55 (PSA EX 5), 70 (PSA EX 5), 75, 81 Hooper (HOF), 84 Johnson (HOF, PSA EX 5), 85 (SCD EX 5), 88 Kling (PSA EX 5), 91 (PSA EX 5), 100, 102b Lewis (emblem on sleeve, PSA EX 5), 103, 104a Livingston ("A" on shirt, PSA EX 5), 104c Livingston (small "C" on shirt, PSA EX 5), 113 McGraw (HOF, PSA EX 5), 118 (PSA EX 5), 119 (PSA EX 5), 124 (PSA EX 5), 128, 137, 141 (PSA EX 5), 145 Phelan (PSA EX 5), 149 Rath, 157, 167 (PSA EX 5), 171 (PSA EX 5), 177 Tinker (HOF, PSA EX 5), 179, 189, 192 Wilson (Pittsburg), and 193 (PSA EX 5). Rare Advertising Backs:
Fourteen cards have the rare red Cycle backs, twenty-eight cards have the rare Broadleaf advertising backs, and eight have no advertising on their reverses (often referred to by collectors in the old days as issued by Coupon Cigarettes). The rare-back cards (Cycle, Broadleaf, and no advertising) are usually associated with the rarer cards in the T207 set, as most were only issued with the rare advertising backs. There are also cards that only come with Recruit backs, however, such as Ellis, Graham, Kling, and Stovall, among others, that are also noteworthy rarities. This is an exceptionally attractive complete set, appearing at a glance far stronger than suggested by the very strong and technically accurate assigned grades listed above. The large number of extremely rare cards in the T207 set makes this issue one of the most difficult to complete of all 1910-era tobacco-card sets. This is an exceptional complete set of this classic and sometimes overlooked tobacco-card issue, which is so rarely offered in complete-set form. The equivalent SMR value for the individual cards is $29,664. Total: 204 cards. Reserve $10,000. Estimate $20,000+. SOLD FOR $41,475
