1911 M131 Baltimore News Newsboys - Art Devlin
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,252
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. This is a very attractive sample card, from the rare M131 Baltimore News Newsboys series, features Art Devlin of the New York Nationals. The 1911 M131 Baltimore News Newsboys Series set is an incredibly rare baseball-card issue. This set is very similar in design to George Close Candy, but with each player image printed against a light blue background on the front, and with the checklist-reverse featuring advertising along the top, which reads, “The Baltimore News Newsboys Series – Prize of $1.00 to First 35 Boys Getting Full Set of the Following." Based on the reverse advertising, this set may have been a special promotion produced for and marketed exclusively to The Baltimore News newsboys. This type of severely limited distribution would certainly account for their extreme rarity. Jefferson Burdick gave this E94-related issue its own catalog number (M131) in the American Card Catalog because it is clearly a distinct issue from E94. Though technically in low grade, this is still a very attractive card, and has a clean reverse, which is especially desirable for a sample card from this set. The card has no major creases and rounded corners but is still a great-looking card. The card appears very harshly evaluated by SGC, which downgraded it due to the notation "M131" having been neatly written in pencil on the top of the reverse. We grade this card Good. This is an exceptional sample from one of the rarest prewar issues in all of card collecting. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
