1910 E103 Williams Caramel Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,148

Graded VG 40 by SGC. One of only three examples graded at this level by SGC, with none graded higher. Extremely high grade example of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson in a portrait pose from the highly desirable E103 Williams Caramel series. This is one of Mathewson’s scarcest, most striking, and all-around most highly regarded cards. The image on this card is the same as that used to produce both the M116 Sporting Life and 1915 E145 Cracker Jack series. As can easily be seen, this card has a particularly strong appearance given its technically accurate SGC-assigned grade, with only a light crease in the lower right corner keeping it from a higher grade. Bright and clean, perfectly centered (a very slight diamond cut), with a crisp portrait set against a bold red background, and light wear to the corners. The blank back has very light soiling (of no consequence). This is an exceptional example of a key Hall of Famer from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+.
