1910 E222 AWH Caramels (Virginia League) Hooker
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,963
Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Outstanding sample card from one of the rarest of all "E" card sets, catalogued E222, issued in 1910 by the A. W. H. Caramel Company, featuring players from the Virginia League. To date, only ten different examples in the set have been found. The cards measure 1.5 x 2.75 inches and picture a player portrait that is tinted red, black, brown, or blue and white. Presented is a red-and-white sample card of Bock Hooker from the 1910 Lynchburg Shoemakers of the Virginia League. This card is all the more interesting in that the pose of Hooker is the very same as that which appears on his T206 baseball card. For A. W. H. Caramel cards (which are not only extremely rare but are usually in very low grade), this is a particularly strong example. Centered slightly to the right with several creases (mostly visible from the reverse), even wear on the corners, and small chip of paper loss along the bottom edge on the reverse. This is only the third E222 example we have offered during the past decade! (REA sold one in 2004 and one in 2005 for $2,875 and $2,900, respectively). This is an extremely attractive, ideal sample card from one of the rarest of all 1910-era card sets. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
