1909 E95 Philadelphia Caramel Honus Wagner

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,370

Graded VG 3 by PSA. Very attractive and extremely conservatively graded example of Hall of Famer Honus Wagner in a batting pose from the E95 Philadelphia Caramel series, one of Wagner's most beautifully designed cards and one of the key cards from this rare and classic 1910-era candy set. The image on this card is unique to the set. The E95 Philadelphia Caramel card of Honus Wagner is one of his most highly prized cards in any grade, but this is a particularly strong VG example with tremendous eye-appeal. Bright and clean, both front and back, with brilliant colors, just a hint of even wear to the corners, perfect registration, and well centered just a hint towards the bottom left. The reverse is virtually flawless, with a very sharply printed checklist for the set. There is a small light crease at the bottom left (of little or no consequence), which appears to be solely responsible for this card not receiving an EX 5 grade. This card would be in magnificent condition for any card issued in 1909, but is all the more so for a caramel card, which, because they were issued with candy, one card per package, tend to survive in lesser condition than their more common tobacco-card counterparts. This is an extraordinary mid-grade example of one of Wagner’s most desirable cards from one of the most popular and colorful of all “E” card issues, and one that would be at home in any extremely high quality classic, Hall of Fame, E95, or Honus Wagner card collection. The SMR value for the assigned grade is $1,750. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,370
