1909-1911 T206 Ty Cobb - Red Background - PSA EX-MT 6

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,555

Graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. High-grade example of what is universally recognized as one of Cobb's most striking cards. The red background pose has long been considered one of the great classics of the T206 set and of all vintage cards. This example has a particularly interesting and noteworthy provenance: It is the T206 Cobb (red background) card from the T206 set that accompanied "The Connecticut Wagner" (that appeared as Lot 3 in REA's May 2010 auction, selling for $282,000). The Plank from the set appeared as Lot 5 in REA's May 2011 auction, selling for $94,000. This auction includes the balance of the set (mostly sold together as a near-set but we've pulled out just a few special cards to be offered individually, including this Cobb which we thought was so sharp it deserved to be its own lot). This is a magnificent T206 Cobb (red background) that has literally not seen the light of day (except to be graded by PSA) since it was purchased by our consignor along with the Connecticut Wagner in 1985. The offered card has a particularly striking portrait, brilliant colors with a strong red background, clean both front and back (one insignificant mark on reverse), with very large borders centered slightly toward the left, with four square corners displaying just a hint of wear (predominately the upper right corner), and flawless registration. This is a very sharp-looking high-grade example of one of the key cards from the premier tobacco issue of the 1910 era. Sweet Caporal advertising on reverse. SMR value is $2,750. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
