1935 R147 Schutter-Johnson "Tarzan and the Crystal Vault of Isis" Complete Set (50) Plus Advertising Poster

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,896

Complete 50-card set of the extremely rare "Tarzan and the Crystal Vault of Isis" card issue, issued by Schutter-Johnson Candy in one-cent packages of "Tarzan of the Apes Candy." R147 Tarzan cards have always been recognized as one of the rarest and most highly regarded sets of the 1930s. This is a very attractive complete set with forty cards ranging from Vg to Ex condition (averaging Vg-Ex overall), and ten cards in slightly lesser condition (mostly Gd). The extreme scarcity of this set is probably due in part to the fact that Schutter-Johnson Candy was such a small company. However, Schutter-Johnson made every effort to impress by creating this exceptionally high quality card issue, which among all the sport and nonsport sets it ever produced is unquestionably its premier card issue. All cards are bright and colorful, and most display much better eye-appeal than suggested by their technically accurate assigned grades. The set is accompanied by an original advertising poster (12.75 x 12.5 inches), which is extremely rare in its own right. In fact, it is the only example we have ever seen! The poster has significant condition issues, but is still very presentable, and has great display value (as intended!). It is not certain if this display piece was produced as a stand-alone cardboard advertising poster, or the top of the display box designed to be used for counter display. It is an extraordinary accompaniment and to the best of our knowledge is the only example known. Total 51 items (50 cards plus poster). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $1,896
