1980 Bob Marley and the Wailers Cardboard Concert Poster
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,304
Concert poster heralding the planned appearance of Bob Marley and the Wailers at the Cole Field House, on the University of Maryland Campus, on September 25, 1980. This is an extremely historic poster. Illness resulted in the canceling of the Maryland show and the rest of the tour. The concert before this date was at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 23, 1980. That was Marley's last concert ever (he had collapsed days before the Pittsburgh show, but went on with the show anyway). After the September 23rd show, Marley canceled the Maryland show and the rest of the tour due to illness. When this poster hung, more than 10,000 tickets had been sold to University of Maryland students. No one knew that Bob Marley would not be able to play this concert, or any other concert, ever. Also advertised to appear on stage with Marley were his backup vocalists, the I Threes, which included his wife. A small photo of Marley and his group appears in the upper right corner. This concert date was part of Marley's 1980 international Uprising Tour, which began in Africa in January, continued on through Europe, and was scheduled to finish in the United States. When this concert was canceled, Marley never performed on stage again. He passed away on May 11, 1981. The poster (21.5 x 30 inches), printed on cardboard stock, displays a few light creases and a number of tack holes in each corner. In Excellent condition overall. Framed to total dimensions of 25.5 x 34.5 inches. Reserve $400. Estimate (open).
