1959 Marilyn Monroe Signed Check
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $2,370
Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc., business check, dated November 20, 1959, signed by Marilyn Monroe. The check, drawn on the Colonial Trust Company of New York, is made out to “May Reis" in the amount of $104.72 and is signed “Marilyn Monroe” in blue ink (grading “9”) along the base. The original check number (156) has been crossed out and the number "180" is written above it in blue ink. May Reis was Monroe's longtime secretary and one of the beneficiaries named in Monroe's will after her death in 1962. Monroe was in between film projects at the time this check was signed. She had completed filming of Some Like it Hot earlier that year, but did not begin work on Let's Make Love until February 1960. Only a very limited number of Marilyn Monroe checks exist. Almost all surfaced approximately thirteen years ago and this small supply has practically vanished into collections. Marilyn Monroe is one of the most forged of all celebrity signatures, giving these checks all the more special significance to collectors. This is an outstanding Marilyn Monroe Productions check example, all the more so given the fact that it is made out to her secretary. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation marks, a light vertical fold, and a tiny edge tear in the upper left corner. In Excellent condition overall. Mounted (by means of photo corners) and framed together with a black-and-white photo (7.5 x 9.5 inches) of Monroe, picturing her during the famous "skirt" scene from The Seven Year Itch. Total Dimensions: 15 x 21 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,370
