1955 Walt Disney Signed Letter with Disneyland Content!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,148

One-page typed letter, dated August 30, 1955, signed by Walt Disney (1901-1966), cofounder of Walt Disney Productions and creator of Mickey Mouse. In this remarkable letter, written on his personal letterhead and dated just six weeks after the official opening of Disneyland in Anaheim, California, Disney responds enthusiastically to a recent visitor to the theme park. In full:

Dear Mr. Hunt - Your enthusiastic and complimentary letter about DISNEYLAND gave us great pleasure indeed, and I want to thank you for taking the time to express your feelings about what you found there. It is most gratifying to know that the time and effort that went into the planning and building of the Park are appreciated. It was interesting to note that you chose to spend the entire week of your vacation with daily visits to DISNEYLAND and found everything to your liking (except the lumps in the mashed potatoes!). No doubt there will be many such problems to ironed out in the beginning but we hope to correct them as we go along. Also, we expect to go on developing and adding new and interesting things, and so far as we are concerned, this project will never reach an absolute state of completion. For that reason, we hope that you will find your future trips to the Park even better than your first. Again, our sincere thanks for your enthusiasm and interest. Sincerely, Walt Disney [signed].

Disney's signature has been scripted in black fountain pen, grading "8." Disneyland was one of Walt Disney's crowning achievements and today, along with Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, is one of the most popular theme parks in the world. It probably gave Walt Disney great joy in receiving this letter, so much so that he felt obligated to personally respond. Walt Disney signed letters are scarce. The fact that Disneyland is the main subject of this one and dates from just a short period after its opening, makes it one of the most desirable of the few Disney letters we have ever handled. The letter (7 x 10 inches) displays two normal mailing folds, as well as a few light surface wrinkles and a tiny speck of age toning on the right border. In Excellent condition overall. Handsomely mounted (by means of photo corners) and framed together with an outstanding photo (14 x 11 inches) of Disney sitting in his car in front of the Disney Studio, with a number of his most famous animated characters superimposed onto the image. Total dimensions: 24 x 34 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $4,148
