1819 James Monroe Land-Grant Document Signed as President

Official United States land grant, dated March 3, 1819, signed by James Monroe (1758-1831), fifth President of the United States. The document, which is both printed and handwritten, grants to "James Stanberry, Assignee of Mountjoy Bailey who was a captain in the late Maryland Line, a certain tract of land estimated to contain three hundred acres." It has been signed in black ink (grading "7/8") by James Monroe as President and by the Commissioner of the General Land Office. The official paper seal of the General Land Office (faded) remains affixed in the lower left corner. The document (11.5 x 8.5 inches) displays horizontal and vertical folds, moderate soiling, and a few minor creases. In Very Good condition overall. Matted and framed together with an engraved likeness of Monroe to total dimensions of 19 x 24 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
