Circa 1888 N332 S. F. Hess Boxers and N172 Old Judge Baseball Tobacco-Card Collection (5)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,555
Collection of five extraordinarily rare and high-grade nineteenth-century baseball and boxing tobacco cards. These cards are part of a recent find that has never before been offered or seen in the collecting world (well, since 1888): 1) N172 Old Judge: Mickey Hughes (#240-8 pose, PSA EX-MT 6, 1889 copyright). Highest-graded example! 2) N332 S. F. Hess Boxers (4 cards): Jack Fallon (PSA EX 5, only example graded by PSA), Malcolm W. Ford (PSA EX 5, only example graded by PSA), Danny Needham (submitted to PSA by our consignor along with the other four cards in this group, and was rejected by PSA for evidence of trimming; we strongly do not believe this card is trimmed; Ex-Mt), and Wm. Sheriff (PSA EX 5, only example graded by PSA). The one other card from this find was an N172 Old Judge of Billy Sunday (a stunning example which is offered separately in this auction as its own lot). This is an extraordinary small group of tobacco-card rarities, in phenomenally high grade. Each of the five cards in this lot is in exceptionally high grade and the S. F. Hess Boxers are extremely rare. Total: 5 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+.
