NBA "50 Greatest Players" Presentation Jacket Issued to Nate "Tiny" Archibald - Worn by Archibald at the 1996 Ceremony!
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $5,925
Original Boston Celtics leather jacket, issued to Nate "Tiny" Archibald in honor of his being named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players. In conjunction with the NBA's 50th Anniversary in 1996, the NBA named its 50 greatest players. Remarkably, 49 of the 50 players selected were alive and present (only Pete Maravich was deceased at the time) when they were honored as part of the 1996-1997 All-Star festivities. The formal ceremony honoring the NBA's 50 Greatest Players took place at halftime of the 1996-1997 NBA All-Star Game. For the ceremony, each of the forty-nine attending honorees was presented a custom-made leather jacket specially crafted by Jeff Hamilton, which was worn on court by each respective player during the awards presentation. The jackets were also worn by the players during the now-famous group photo taken immediately afterwards. This is the very jacket worn by Nate Archibald during that presentation ceremony and it is accompanied by a signed LOA from his former wife (the consignor of the piece) attesting to its provenance. The green-and-white leather jacket features Archibald's number "7" on the right sleeve and the NBA 50 Greatest Players logo on the left breast. The team name, "Celtics," is lettered on the reverse. Located on the interior is a special label, signed by Hamilton in gold paint pen, that makes note of its special provenance: "This is a Limited Edition of 50 jackets designed by Jeff Hamilton, commissioned by the National Basketball Association to Honor the Fifty Greatest Players in the History of the League. February 9, 1997." In the past fifteen years, this is only the third example of a player-issued NBA 50 Greatest Players jacket we have ever seen offered at public auction, with the other two, like this one, consigned either directly by the player or a family member. The fact that this is also a Celtics jacket, commemorating one of the NBA's most successful and storied franchises, only adds to its significance. Ideally, the jacket comes complete with its original red garment bag, displaying Jeff Hamilton's crest on the front. The jacket displays minimal wear and is in Near Mint to Mint condition, appearing just as it did when worn by Archibald during the ceremony. This is truly a unique piece of NBA history, and one that is seldom seen at public auction. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,925
