1986 Pete Maravich Twice-Signed Check - PSA/DNA Gem Mint 10
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,422
Personal check, dated August 25, 1986, signed twice by legendary basketball Hall of Famer "Pistol Pete" Maravich (1947-1988). The check has been encapsulated by PSA/DNA, with the two blue-ink signatures having both been graded "GEM MINT 10." The check, which bears the printed names of Maravich and his wife ("Pete or Jackie Maravich"), is drawn on the St. Tammany National Bank of Covington, Louisiana, and is made out to "Cash" in the amount of $400. Maravich has signed the check on the front and then once again on the reverse as an endorsement. Maravich signed items, especially checks, are scarce because of his early death at the age of forty in 1988. While this is not the first Maravich check we have seen (a limited number of other examples are known, all long ago sold by the Maravich family), it is the only twice-signed example we have seen. That fact, combined with its encapsulated GEM-MINT 10 status for the signatures, makes this arguably the finest Maravich check in the hobby today. This is the first Maravich check we have ever offered and we cannot imagine a more desirable example. The check (8 x 3 inches) displays three very light vertical folds (barely noticeable), as well as normal bank cancellation stamps; otherwise it is in Near Mint condition. Matted and framed together with three different basketball trade cards of Maravich: 1970 Topps #123 (rookie card; PSA 8; SMR value for this card is $465); 1971 Topps #55 (Vg); and 1974 Topps #10 (Vg). All of the items have been mounted and framed together to create an exceptionally attractive wall display. (All of the items can be easily removed if desired.) Ideally, the piece has been framed with Plexiglas on each side, so that both the front and reverse of the check can be viewed in their entirety. Total dimensions: 17 x 16 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,422
